According to local authorities in northern Samangan province of Afghanistan, at least 20 people died following an explosion in a coal mine in this province.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning in Dara-e-Suf Bala district of Samangan province, district chief Abdul Khaliq said.
Mr. Khaliq further added that 20 people were killed following the explosion and a number of others were trapped inside the coal mine.
This comes as provincial governor Khairullah Anoosh earlier said that 17 people were killed following the explosion in a coal mine where illegal extraction was going on.
Mr. Anosh further added that preliminary reports suggest that the explosion took place due to chemicals used for the extration of the mine.
Provincial police Chief Gen. Muhammad Begzad said at least 25 people were trapped following the explosion in the coal mine.
